Book Review: A Big Mooncake for Little Star – cake at bedtime? Yum!

by Grace Lin, published by Little, Brown/Hachette – Caldecott Honor 2019

Everything about this book glows with a peaceful, whimsical luminosity. It’s one of my daughter’s favourite bedtime stories, the one we have at the end to settle us down and be ready to sleep. Little Star and she would be the best of friends – sweet, a bit cheeky in their star pjyamas with snuggly bunny under one arm, trailing shining crumbs of Mooncake behind them as evidence. As we read, she eats the Mooncake with Little Star, little nibble by little nibble, plucking them off the page to pop them in her mouth – yum!

The loving trust between Little Star and her mama as Little Star confesses sets the perfect tone for going to bed. We read this night after night, and it’s like watching my daughter’s friendship with Little Star deepen as they share the cake together again and again. One thing we always puzzle over, on the inside cover we see Little Star and her mama baking together – what is the blue substance in the bowl on the chair on the right? We’ve been wondering together for months now.
